Where is the Humane Society of Summit County's free mobile unit going in April?

Fresh from its move from Twinsburg to Cuyahoga Falls last November, the Humane Society of Summit County is taking its show on the road.

Throughout April, the organization is sending its mobile unit — dubbed with the catchy name MABEL for "Making Animals Better and Enriching Lives" — to locations in Akron and Barberton.

The good news is that the services, which range from spaying and neutering to vaccines and checkups, are free to pet owners with proof of participation in assistance programs such as WIC and SNAP. A list of MABEL times, and other details on the program, can be found at summithumane.org.

Here's a list of the locations MABEL will visit:

50-pound limit on dogs for MABEL

Dogs need to be under 50 pounds for MABEL to be able to accommodate them, said Colleen Repie, director of development and marketing for the Humane Society.

Puppies must be at least three months old and kittens must weigh 2 pounds or be three months old, she said.

The mobile unit launched in 2022, and proved a popular service, Repie said. When it began, it charged a low-cost fee, but eligible dog and cat owners will get services for free this time around.

"These communities we're going to are newer communities we haven't been to," she said.

MABEL is funded through the support of donors, including the Cynthia Parker Matthews Family Foundation, Marci Mathews and the MABEL Care Fund.
