Netherlands Asks Iran to Assist in Red Sea Security

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of the Netherlands called on Iran to contribute to maritime security in the Red Sea.

In a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart on Wednesday, Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp voiced concern about the escalation of tensions in the region.

He also called for the diplomatic settlement of differences.

Veldkamp then asked Iran to play a role in ensuring the security of international navigation in the Red Sea.

For his part, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi underlined Iran’s determination to press on with its peaceful nuclear program in compliance with the international law.

He also noted that Iran is ready for genuine negotiations on an equal standing with the US, albeit indirectly, stressing the need for a constructive atmosphere and avoidance of stances based on threats, intimidation and ransom.

Denouncing the unacceptable threats issued by the American officials against Iran, Araqchi said those comments are in breach of the UN Charter and would only complicate the situation.

The foreign minister also warned that Iran will respond swiftly and decisively to any violation of its territorial integrity, sovereignty and national interests.

Reminding the UN member states’ of their responsibility to safeguard the rule of law, Araqchi deplored the European Union’s inaction on the US officials’ provocative rhetoric of military action that jeopardize international peace and security.
