Europe's cheapest capital city lies in a country that "loves" Brits, where beers are £1.68 and five-star hotels cost £59 per person. Bordering Montenegro, Albania, Serbia and Macedonia, the most affordable capital city lies in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, according to analysis by Vatican Tours and Tickets.

After comparing last year's average price of food, travel and hotels across many European capitals, Pristina in Kosovo came out on top, with average expenses totalling just £25.24 (€29.97) per day, and hotel prices averaging £118.78 (€141.03), based on a five-night stay in September. According to Numbeo figures, a coffee cost £1, a beer just £1.68, and a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant came in at just £18 for two people.

Numbeo's cost of living index found the capital city was 68 percent less expensive than London, without considering rent.

Kosova is also known for being welcoming to Brits, given the involvement of the UK armed forces during the conflict with Serbia in the 1990s. British troops were part of a NATO-led Kosovo Force, or KFOR.

“The British KFOR guys would be on patrol and sometimes they’d get into the game, we’d pass some balls with them," local Atdhe Muharremi told The Guardian.

"They’d stop, talk to us, join in. It was a way of gesturing, bonding through playing, we didn’t need the same language.

“We saw them as our heroes. They were very nice, very loving with us. It was a certain mutual love without words, the energy we felt. We could sense this love.”

The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Serbian Orthodox Gracanica Monastery is a must-see in Pristina, with its stunning architecture and frescoes.

To get a taste of Kosovan life, visit the Ethnological museum which is within a traditional Albanian house and showcases the culture and history of Kosovo, including the customs, clothing, and crafts of the region.

You could also stroll through the Germia park, perfect for hiking or even swimming, and it offers beautiful views of Pristina.
