Area music club to hold young musicians’ auditions

WHEELING — The 72nd-annual Young Musician’s Auditions will be held April 4-5 at Vance Memorial Church in Wheeling.

The church is located at 905 National Road.

Sponsored by the Thursday Music Club, the auditions will feature piano and vocal performances.

These auditions provide young musicians with an opportunity to showcase their talents, according to club members.

John Rose will serve as the judge for the piano performances, while Angela Day will adjudicate the vocal auditions.

Students who receive a superior rating or a superior with honors rating, will be invited to perform in an honor’s recital.

The recital has been scheduled for 2 p.m. on April 13 in the sanctuar

y of Vance Presbyterian Church.

A reception will follow the event, officials announced.

Members of the Thursday Music Club are encouraging the community to “come out and celebrate the hard work and dedication of these aspiring artists.”

Rose is an international prize-winning pianist and composer.

He has performed his own piano music twice at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

His compositions, including solo works, opera, piano concerto, violin concerto and cello concerto, have been performed in North America, Europe and Asia.

He has appeared on radio and television, commenting and playing his own music.

Rose has recorded his works on various labels, according to officials.

At the age of 18, Rose played the complete Chopin Etudes in concerts throughout Ohio and West Virginia.

His studies took him to Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory and Cleveland, where he worked with Robert Mayerovitch and Professor Dina Khudaiberdieva.

At Indiana University, he was a student of Karen Shaw.

Rose is the principal at St. John Central Academy in Ohio.

Day has worked with music students in the Ohio Valley for many years.

She teaches sixth- through eighth-grade chorus at Triadelphia Middle School, and general music courses to those in kindergarten through fifth grade at Steenrod Elementary School.

Previously, Day was an adjunct professor of voice at West Liberty University, a position she held for 14 years.

She holds a doctor of musical arts and master of music degrees in vocal performance from Louisiana State University.

She has a bachelor of science degree in vocal performance from Mid-America Christian University.

While attending LSU, Day performed in operas and oratorios.

She has performed various languages by composers such as Handel, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Bizet, Puccini, Poulenc, Ravel, Barab, Vaughn Williams, Gilbert and Sullivan and Sondheim.

Day continues to perform recitals and other concerts in the Wheeling area.

She is a frequent judge for local voice events, such as West Virginia Solo and Ensemble, the Thursday Music Club and Tri-State NATS competitions.

She maintains a private studio and is “a mom of three amazing kids and two adorable dogs,” she stated.
