John DiCarlo
Outside hitter John DiCarlo was a force to be reckoned with.
The transfer student-athlete coming from James Bennett High School in Salisbury, Md., celebrated his first game this week in an Indian River High School boys’ volleyball uniform with 14 kills and 12 digs.
The senior’s heroics helped IRHS defeat visiting Henlopen Conference rival Sussex Academy, 3-0, in the season opener for both teams on Monday, March 24.
DiCarlo came thought with a barrage of explosive kills to help the Indians clinch the third set, 25-17. They won the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 27-25 against a determined Seahawks’ squad.

Zach Hirn
IRHS junior setter Zachary Hirn added 22 digs and 26 assists, while junior outside hitter Amor Townsend added eight kills.
“Overall, we were a little rough, maybe nervous,” said head coach Mike Markovic, who is now in his second season at the Indians’ helm. “We missed too many serves.”
“Fortunately, our offense looks good for this being early in the season,” Markovic added. “And our defense has improved from last season as well.”
