Angola loses to Cape Verde and complicates qualification for the 2026 World Cup

The national football team, coached by Portuguese Pedro Gonçalves, lost this Tuesday to Cape Verde by 2-1 and complicated the qualification for the 2026 World Cup, in a game of the sixth round of the African qualifying Group D.

In a match played at the 11 de Novembro stadium in Luanda, Cape Verde opened the scoring in the 45th minute, through Dailon Livramento, who scored twice in the 63rd minute, after Gerson Dala had equalised for the Angolans in the 50th minute.

With this result, the Angolan team finds itself further away from the top spots in Group D, now in fourth place, with seven points, six behind Cape Verde, which leads with 13. Cameroon is in second place, having beaten Libya 3-1, now with 12 points. Libya, after the defeat, dropped to third, with eight. The last two places are occupied by Mauritius (five points) and eSwatini (two points).

Pedro Gonçalves' team is now more dependent on third parties to secure qualification for the tournament that will take place in Canada, the United States and Mexico, and will play again on 31 August, when they host Libya.

The 54 African countries have been divided into nine groups of six teams, with the winners of each group automatically qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, while the four best second-placed teams will compete in a tournament that will decide the team that will represent Africa in an intercontinental play-off, which could increase the number of African countries in the World Cup to 10.
