Screen spotlight: What’s on in Preston cinemas 21 to 27 March

This week, Disney presents their latest live-action remake, Snow White, starring Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler. Also new in cinemas, Robert De Niro plays a dual role in The Alto Knights, a crime drama about two competing mob bosses. This week also sees The Flower Bowl hosting their latest special presentation in association with Lytham International Film Festival, with more details on that below.

In addition to new releases, these are the unique listings for Preston’s local cinemas from Friday 21 to Thursday 27 March.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods [Extended Cut]

The hit anime series Dragon Ball is one of the most popular animes of all time. The franchise has also expanded to include several movies and additional series. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods initially came out in 2013, but with this special extended cut with subtitles, fans can expect to see this epic story in a whole new light.

All Week

Flow won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film over competitive entries like Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, from Preston’s own Nick Park. The film features a beautiful stylistic animated style and is free from any human speech. Instead, it features a wide variety of real animal sounds.

Opus

The Arc Cinema – Book Here

Opus released just last week, but it appears to already be cutting back in terms of screenings. The film stars Ayo Edebiri as a writer who finds herself surrounded by a cult. The film is a psychological drama, and if it’s one you don’t want to miss, The Arc is the only place in Preston you’ll find it playing this week.

Bonhoeffer

The Flower Bowl – Book Here

Bonhoeffer is a period drama that centres on the extraordinary life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The German Lutheran pastor risked everything in an effort to take part in a plot to assassinate Hitler. The film depicts the true story of this account, with plenty of drama and thrills. Playing exclusively at The Flower Bowl.

Of the eight Academy Award categories that Conclave was nominated for, it managed to win only one for Best Adapted Screenplay. Starring Ralph Fiennes and a slate of stunning actors, the movie has proven very popular with audiences. Now, The Flower Bowl continues to feature the film prominently alongside other listings, while The Arc is hosting a special Silver Screen showing, which will be free for seniors.

The Last Showgirl

The Last Showgirl stars Pamela Anderson in a touching drama about a 57-year-old showgirl whose show has just been cancelled after 30 years. The film was nominated for a BAFTA, but despite critical success, it has not received a widespread release.

Bad Boys

Bad Boys is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, which is reflected in the decisions for both Odeon and Vue to play the film this week. Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, this 1995 film launched a franchise that is still active today. A buddy cop comedy that has built up a dedicated fanbase over the years.

Julia Donaldson’s popular stories for children have been adapted into animated short features that are beloved by kids. So, if you need something to keep the younger kids and toddlers entertained, this is the perfect listing.

The Wild Robot

The Wild Robot is an incredible animated feature film based on the novel by Peter Brown. It’s a touching star that combines AI with nature in a wild setting that is sure to keep the entire family engaged. This week, it will be featured prominently at The Arc Cinema as part of their kids club offering.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack

For all the anime fans in Preston, Attack on Titan is one of the most popular animes to be released in recent years. As the show has developed and expanded, it’s moved beyond the small screen, and now includes a feature film that further adds to the franchise. This week, that film will be available in a dubbed version at Vue.

Enter The Dragon

Bruce Lee stars in Enter The Dragon. Initially released in 1974, this martial arts movie helped to push the boundaries of this style of film and make it appealing to a global audience. Easily one of Lee’s best performances, and available on the big screen for a limited time at Vue this week.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Sticking with the classic cinema selection, Vue is also putting on a showing of James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Arguably the best entry in the series, this film introduced the T-1000 and pushed what was possible with CGI in film. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, it’s an action-packed sci-fi adventure.

Ne Zha 2

It’s very likely that you have never heard of Ne Zha or the sequel, both of which were released primarily in China. However, Ne Zha 2 has managed to shake up the global box office as it has rocketed to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The film has reportedly earned almost $2 billion (£1.5 billion) which puts it firmly in the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time.

Panda Bear in Africa

Panda Bear in Africa is a children’s animated film from China, which follows a young panda and their best friend, a dragon. When the dragon is taken to be presented as a gift to a group of African lions, the panda sets off to save their friend.

Transformers One

Transformers One came out in late 2024, and despite having a small box office compared to the live-action films in the series, Transformers One has received some of the best reviews for the franchise in a long time. It’s a wonderful animated feature suitable for the whole family, and well worth watching for any fans of the toys and cartoons.

Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert

Hans Zimmer is the incredible musician and composer whose work has shaped film for decades. With contributions to movies like The Lion King, Dune, Interstellar, The Dark Knight and so much more, his legacy in film can’t be overstated. Now, a special concert experience will be screening in Vue on Sunday, celebrating his incredible work.

The Royal Ballet: Romeo & Juliet

For fans of the ballet, this week will see The Royal Ballet perform Romeo & Juliet on the big screen in Vue. The performance is not to be missed for fans of dance and Shakespeare, and the event screening promises to be a night to remember.

We Live In Time

We Live in Time is a beautiful and emotional story that takes a non-linear approach to storytelling. Starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh as a young couple embracing and enduring the challenges that life throws their way, it’s a deeply touching movie.

I’m Still Here

Monday

I’m Still Here is a film from Brazil that was popular in the recent awards season. The film follows a political drama narrative about a woman married to a former politician who must reinvent her life after increasing struggles. It’s beautiful, heartfelt, and well worth a watch.

Independent Film Night – Unconquered by John Parr

In association with the Lytham International Film Festival, The Flower Bowl is hosting special screenings of short films, with special guests and Q&As on the last Tuesday of each month. This is a great opportunity to see something completely different and support independent filmmakers. This week The Flower Bowl will be host to filmmaker John Parr, best known for St. Elmo’s Fire and his work making theme songs for films for a special screening of his film Unconquered.

Becoming Led Zeppelin

Unlike the flood of musical biopics that have appeared in cinemas over the last couple of years, Becoming Led Zeppelin takes a different approach, while still demanding that big screen treatment. The film is a documentary with interviews, recorded performances, and never-before-seen footage. This is the definitive and official film covering the early years of the world-famous rock band.

Macbeth: David Tennant & Cush Jumbo

David Tennant had an incredibly popular run as Doctor Who from 2005 to 2010, but since then, his career has seen him appear in numerous other projects across the screen and stage. Tennant’s performances in Shakespearian plays have been particularly successful, and his latest West End outing with Cush Jumbo in Macbeth is no different. Having received numerous 5-star reviews, this show is not one to miss, and fortunately, it returns to Vue this week.

Twiggy was a huge fashion icon who became a household name in the 1960s. Now, director Sadie Frost leads a documentary exploring her life and rise to prominence, with interviews of famous figures such as Dustin Hoffman, Paul McCartney, and Joanna Lumley who describe her influence and prominence at the height of her fame and in the decades since.

Imagine Dragons: Live From The Hollywood Bowl

Imagine Dragons is an immensely popular pop-rock band that took the world by storm over a decade ago with songs like Radioactive. Now, as global superstars, the band is performing one of their biggest shows to date, which has been recorded in order to share it with fans here in the UK in local cinemas.

Novocaine is a high-octane dark comedy starring Jack Quaid, who audiences may recognise from The Boys, or recent films like Companion starring opposite Sophie Thatcher. The film is about a man who can’t feel pain and uses this ability to rescue the girl of his dreams from thugs. The film doesn’t officially release in the UK until 28 March, but Odeon and Vue have managed to get some special early screenings ahead of the general release.

Steve Coogan stars in a special stage adaptation of the famous Stanley Kubrick film, Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. A dark comedy film that is set during the height of the Cold War, the story has been adapted and brought to life once again with comedy legend Coogan as the lead.
