AHSAA soccer playoffs: St. Michael boys, girls win opening-round matches

The St. Michael Catholic boys and girls soccer squads won their opening round Class 4A playoff matches on Tuesday at home – the boys at the Fairhope Soccer Complex and the girls at Manley Park.

The top-ranked boys beat No. 2 Montgomery Catholic 4-0 to improve to 16-8 on the season. Catholic finishes the season at 15-6. The Cardinals got single goals from Tomas Christensen, Etienne Duchesne, Sam Edmiston and Jack Charles.

St. Michael will play Bayside Academy in the second round on Thursday at 7 p.m.

St. Michael’s second-ranked girls beat Trinity Presbyterian 3-1. Katy Ford, Sabrina Pulido and Francheska Arellano each had a goal in the win.

The Cardinals are 17-2 while Trinity dropped to 12-4. St. Michael will face Orange Beach at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

BOYS

CLASS 6A

Montgomery Academy 3, Pike Road 2

Montgomery Academy came from behind to edge Pike Road at home on Tuesday in second-round playoff action.

Tanner Bartgis scored on a corner kick, assisted by Jacob Stubblefield to give the Eagles an early lead before Pike Road tied the match in the first half and scored to take a 2-1 advantage in the second half.

Luis Rubio found the net for Montgomery Academy to knot the score before John Allen Lachney scored the game-winner.

Montgomery Academy (14-5-2) will face Spanish Fort in the third round on either Thursday or Friday. Pike Road ends the season at 14-8-1.

CLASS 1A/3A

Tanner 11, Geraldine 1

Defending champion Tanner rolled past Geraldine on Tuesday in the opening round of the playoffs. Cade Dorning led the fourth-ranked Rattlers with 4 goals.

Steven Lopez recorded a hat trick for Tanner. Justin Moreno had 2 goals and 4 assists. Randy Cortes added a goal and finished with 2 assists.

GIRLS

CLASS 6A

Montgomery Academy 2, Pike Road 0

Fourth-ranked Montgomery Academy blanked Pike Road at home on Tuesday. The Montgomery area rivals played a scoreless first half.

Montgomery Academy (12-3-1) got on the board with 15 minutes left in the second half when Sophia Cho took a shot on the edge of the box that went in at the bottom left corner. Kerstin Daniel added an insurance goal two minutes later, taking a quick throw-in pass and beating her defender from 20 yards out.

Montgomery Academy finished its home season undefeated and will play at No. 6 Spanish Fort (14-7-1) on Friday in the third round.

CLASS 4A

Westminster Christian 12, West Morgan 0

Top-ranked and defending champion Westminster Christian made short work of West Morgan at home on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the state playoffs.

The Wildcats scored all 12 goals in the opening half, ending the game.

Jasmine Feld and AnnaLi Weekley both scored hat tricks for Westminster Christian. Eighth-grader Annie Collier and senior Clara Norris scored 2 goals each in the rout. Seniors Esther Parker and Callie Lanier finished the scoring for the Wildcats with a goal each.

Westminster (15-2-1) did not allow a shot on goal all night making keeper Piper Blazier a spectator. West Morgan never moved the ball inside the box and only possessed the ball past midfield five times all game.

Westminster will travel to Mars Hill – a 3-2 winner over Priceville on penalty kicks in overtime on Tuesday – on Thursday for a 5 p.m. contest. The winner will advance to the semifinals on May 8 in Huntsville at John Hunt Park.

St. James 4, Prattville Christian 0

St. James, ranked No. 1 in the AHSAA soccer coaches’ final poll, blanked Prattville Christian on Tuesday in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Trojans got a single goal from Mary Grace Hixon, Katie Brightwell, Natalie Barton and Hope McCain. Hixon also had 2 assists. McCain and Sana Shuford also had an assist each in the win.

St. James plays Tuscaloosa Academy in Round 2 on Friday at Carlisle Field. The Trojans are 14-1-1 on the season.
