Celebrating a half-century at Yale: the growth and impact of the ISM

April 23, 2024
Watch this short video that traces the growth and impact of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music throughout its fifty years at Yale University, in close partnership with Yale Divinity School and Yale School of Music.

Established a half-century ago through a gift from the Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation of Columbus, Indiana, the ISM started out with one administrator, three faculty, and ten students. The Institute is now a thriving international community of well over a hundred faculty, students, and fellows who—from a breathtaking diversity of perspectives and disciplines—explore, consider, and foster the ways that people have manifested their faith through worship, music, and other forms of artistic expression.

There will be several anniversary celebrations from April 26 to May 5, including a Festal Evensong featuring the newly formed Yale Consort; David Hill conducting Yale Schola Cantorum and Juilliard415 in a performance of the Bach B Minor Mass; and the anniversary closing event “All Creation Sings”, an ecumenical hymn festival with a community choir of 300 voices and guest preachers, the Rev. Dr. Barbara Brown Taylor and the Rev. Dr. James Forbes. View details of all anniversary events which are free and open to the public.

Happy 50th anniversary to the Yale Institute of Sacred Music!
