A classic addition to a chippy tea has found its way into M&S - and people aren't impressed.

Whether you're a chips, fish, and curry sauce kind of guy - or much prefer a Pukka pie with mushy peas - a Friday night trip to the fish and chip shop is what dreams are made of. If you're from the North you'll might also ask for 'scraps' on top of your meal.

No Londoners, that is not code for a brawl. Scraps are the bits of deep-fried batter left over after frying a fish. In eateries across the North, they're still free to add onto your chippy order.

After spotting a tub of scraps in Marks and Spencer for a whopping £2, one post on X (formerly Twitter) has gone viral. Jason Reid, who came across the usually-free additions, uploaded a photo with the caption: "*Rubs temples*." He added: "TWO C***ING QUID. They were free when I was a kid."

Hundreds of gobsmacked users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts. "What the actual f***? Rip off!" one person fumed. Another wrote: "At two quid for scraps, it seems they must be aimed at the middle classes." While a third added: "£40 per kilo of BATTER. Christ."

Many also confirmed that they can still get scraps at the chippy without having to pay. "They're still free in the chippy - £2 wow," one person wrote. Another agreed, commenting: "They're still free at the chippy and I bet they taste better." A third added: "Me too. We'd go in and just ask for a bag of scraps. No chips. If they had loads they'd give us some."

M&S launched the Chip Shop Scraps back in 2018, when an 80g pot cost £1.08. A spokesperson for M&S told the Mirror: "Our chip shop scraps have proved popular with customers up and down the country since launching back in 2018. Many enjoy as part of their chippy tea, and we know some customers enjoy sprinkling across a variety of meals."
