The number of homes in Hungary has grown even as the population has declined, data from the 2022 census presented by officials from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Tuesday show.

The census data show 9,604,000 people lived in Hungary in October 2022, a decline of 3.4% from the previous census conducted in 2011, Marcell Kovács, project head for the census, said. During the same period, the country's housing stock rose by 190,000, or 4.3%, to 4.6 million, he added.

The number of residents per 100 homes fell by eleven to 237. The average home size increased 4 sqm to 82 sqm, while the share of homes with four or more rooms rose by almost 30%.

The number of homes rose the most in the area around Lake Balaton and in the capital and environs.

More than one-third of housing stock was constructed between 1960 and 1980, while 14% was built after 2000 and 16% was from the period before WWII. Most of the oldest, as well as the newest homes, are in the capital.

The census data show most homes are heated with gas, although the smaller the settlement, the greater the chance its residents also heat with an alternative, such as wood.

Around 68,000 homes use a heat pump and 165,000 have solar panels.

The number of homes not regularly occupied stood at 599,000 last year, 13% of the total housing stock, up two percentage points from the last census.
