Singer Michael Bublé said his young son’s “unthinkable” battle with cancer gave him a new perspective on life, forcing him to abandon his “alter ego.”

The 47-year-old Grammy Award winner said he felt like “the superhero I always wanted to be” before his son Noah was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a form of liver cancer, at the age of 3 in 2016.

The child had to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy following his diagnosis. He is now in remission.

“That, of course, changed me in a big way – it changed what mattered to me, it changed how I saw life,” Bublé told Red magazine, per The Daily Mail.

“For most of my life as an entertainer and, especially on stage, I’d become my alter ego,” he continued. “’I’d become the superhero I always wanted to be. Then my wife and I went through this unthinkable thing, and I lost that alter ego.”

The “Feeling Good” crooner has been married to Luisana Lopilato since 2011, and the two share four children, including Noah. Bublé also spoke about the secret to making his marriage work.

“More than anything, my wife and I understand that each other’s fulfillment is important,” he told the publication. “I’m not saying we’re perfect – nobody is – but we both have that understanding.”

“I won’t be touring for certain months next year because she’ll be filming a movie, and so I’ll be Daddy on set, and then she’ll do the same for me,” the singer continued. “We don’t care what we do – being together is the goal.”

After Noah’s diagnosis, Bublé took a step back from music to focus on his family.

“I didn’t anticipate returning to recording or performing and I was fine with that,” he said in 2018. “My entire worldview has changed completely these last few years. I wanted to spend all my time with my wife and kids. That was my focus.”

“During that time, I also learned how much love and humanity is out in the world from the prayers and good wishes we received,” he continued. “But slowly, along with understanding what my priorities in life are, I began to feel a new commitment to express the emotions and lessons I’ve embraced.”

It wasn’t just the diagnosis that shifted Bublé’s perspective. Even before Noah was born, the Canadian-born performer said he prioritized his family over his career.

“I just don’t want to look back and say, ‘God, I should have been there more,’” he said during an interview with People magazine.

“Because I have a feeling that I’ll never look back and say, ‘Jeez, I should have worked more.’”
