The Sock Hops will return to the Troup High Fine Arts Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 28 for a concert to benefit the Troup High Alumni Association.

The group will return at the Troup High Fine Arts Auditorium, performing music from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Tickets are currently on sale for $15 and can be purchased at Troup High School, LaGrange Toyota, Landscape Supply of LaGrange and Weather’s Honda.

The concert is sponsored by the Troup High Alumni Association. Proceeds from the event go to help pay for the club’s efforts to support the school and its students and faculty.

Alumni association President Shane Frailey said the club sponsors three scholarships each year for Troup High graduating seniors.

Since 2017, the Troup High Alumni Association has awarded the Walter Earl Thompson Memorial Scholarship to two THS seniors.

Walter “Big Earl” Thompson was a graduate of Troup High School and a former Troup County Sheriff’s Deputy. His daughter, Jennifer Thompson, was the inaugural recipient of the scholarship.

Last year, the club introduced the Ellis P. Cadenhead Citizenship Award Scholarship in honor of THS Alumni Association founder Ellis Cadenhead, who is still an active member and the current Troup County Commissioner for District 2.

“It’s an honor to have that recognition from the school where I graduated from, and I continue to support,” Cadenhead said. “It’s also a great opportunity for our dollars to be shared with the students of Troup High School.”

Since then the Troup High Alumni Association has provided three $1,000 scholarships to THS seniors each year.

In addition to the scholarships, the alumni association provides a barbecue luncheon for THS faculty during Teacher Appreciation Week each year and pays for various items needed by student programs.

Frailey said they recently paid for a drum major podium for the Troup High Marching Band.

The concert offers attendees a chance to step back in time and enjoy the music of their youth. Frailey said the event isn’t a dance; it’s a concert, but they will have a small dance floor where people can dance if they would like.

The Sock Hops have been asked to come back to perform at the annual alumni association concert for several years.

“They’re an enjoyable group by all,” Cadenhead said. “They’re a very talented group that brings memories back to the point that you sing along with them because you know all the songs. It was just a delightful time period of our lives that we shared.”

Frailey said the money raised by the event will go toward giving back to the students and faculty of Troup High School.

“We’d love for people to come out and have a good time,” Cadenhead said.

The concert will be held at the Troup High Fine Arts Auditorium at 1920 Hamilton Road on Saturday, Jan. 28., starting at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
