This week’s live music choices

groovy duo

Live music is back and there is something for everyone. Jazz standards, rock tunes and Latin rhythms are coming up this week at bars across the country. On Wednesday, the Tudor Inn Bar will welcome back singer Alice Ayvazian, saxophonist Marios Papares and pianist Loukas Louka for an evening of soul to remember the Legendary Ladies of Jazz.

The three musicians will present a special tribute to some of the iconic jazz singers of the 20th century, remembering music and honouring the ultimate divas: Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.

Two days later and Limassol bar Vinylio Wine Etc will have more live music to fill the island’s nightlife scene. Natalia Goulevitch and Alexis Nicolaou, a.k.a. the Groovy Duo will perform a wide range of acoustic pop-rock dance music covering old and new hits.

Also performing on Friday but in Nicosia is the well-known Latin jazz band, Havana Noche which will return to Sarah’s Jazz Club with uplifting Latin beats. The band was formed in Cyprus by percussionist Constandinos Paouros with musicians from Cuba, Colombia and Cyprus. Their music is based on Latin jazz music genres such as son cubano, salsa, timba and cha cha and their Friday live performance will encompass them all.

Then, on Saturday another local ensemble will take the stage of Nicosia’s jazz bar. The Kalopedis Quartet, led by George Kalopedis, is a jazz band with his signature spirited vocals. Loukas Loukas is on piano, backed by the tuned-in, skillful rhythms of drummer Kris Grecian and double bassist Costas Challoumas. The band’s repertoire is swinging, classic jazz, soul & RnB with tunes made famous by male vocalists like Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, Michael Bublé, Ray Charles and Van Morrison.

In a more rock mood is the Coverdose band who will meet singers Francois Micheletto, George Gregoriou Kinezos and Myrto Meletiou on the stage of DownTown Live on Saturday. Their late-night show starting at around 11pm will include a live amalgamation of English and Greek music.
