The List: BEAMS bringing electronic music, art and dance to Idylwylde

Article content

The Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS) is back with its first live show since the pandemic hit, featuring music, visual art and dancing.

BEAMS has been around in the city since 1989, said electronic musician and organizer Chris Samsonow.

“It’s a non-profit society dedicated to the promotion and production of sound art, experimental music and new media,” he said, “and its membership consists of professional musicians, composers and performance artists from diverse backgrounds.”

There are around 100 members, and the society — five virtual shows were held during the pandemic — is always looking for new members.

On tap to play the Saturday concert at Idylwylde Community League (8631 81 St.) are multi-instrumentalist Trevor DePagie, sequencer specialist Stephen Sereda, sound artist Wayne DeFehr, teen electronic dance music performer Noah Benavides, clarinet player and composer Don Ross with dancer Deviani Andrea, and DJ das Weichei.

“Don Ross is a great composer and is very talented with the clarinet. He uses loopers and effects pedals and makes amazing experimental music, and he’s also incorporating a friend of his who’s a dancer,” Samsonow said. “Noah is a younger fellow, an up-and-coming experimental musician really into that stuff, and he’s going to be playing synthesizers and guitar and running it through some interesting effects.”

Samsonow will have a bunch of gear on display on a table, “so community members are welcome to come and freely be able to touch knobs and bend faders and all that, and make all sorts of noise or try and play music.”

Some of these will also be hooked up where the sound is correlated with a reactive projection, which sounds like a lot of fun.

The demonstration starts at 2 p.m., with the concert happening from 8-11 p.m. Concert admission is free to Idylwylde Community League members, $7 for BEAMS members and $15 for the public, admission at the door.
