Southern California’s The Aquadolls — fresh off an appearance at the Ohana Festival in Dana Point — have released a new music video for the group’s latest single, “Disappearing Girl.” Stream the video at https://youtu.be/Zja1MS5sYrc.
The Aquadolls are riding high after a busy summer, which saw them opening for Jimmy Eat World at Chicago’s Metro, gracing the stages at Lollapalooza and Beachlife Festival and playing a livestream set for Paste Magazine. The trio also performed Sept. 25 at the Ohana Festival alongside Eddie Vedder, Maggie Rogers, Glen Hansard, Spoon and the Cold War Kids and performed live on Tim Pyle’s long-running 91X show Loudspeaker in San Diego.
“With twinges of inspiration from the Sofia Coppola film ‘The Virgin Suicides,’ we created our own 1970s-inspired tale with the help of vintage fashion, film cameras and romantic faux pas,” said frontwoman Melissa Brooks. “Directed by our friend and close collaborator, Savanna Morales, we tell the story of three girls who are all being led on by the same guy, catching him in the end and coming together as best friends.”
The Aquadolls was formed in La Mirada, California, in January 2012 by Brooks, the band’s lead singer and songwriter. Brooks began recording bedroom demos of her songs and eventually released the album “We Are Free” in early 2013, followed by the LP “Stoked on You” in December 2014.
After a brief break from releases, the stars aligned in July 2018, and the new era of The Aquadolls commenced with Jacqueline Proctor on drums and Keilah Nina on bass. The band grew as a powerful threesome leading up to the release of The Aquadolls’ highly anticipated second album, “The Dream and the Deception,” recorded and self-produced by Brooks and self-released Oct. 28, 2018, on Aqua Babe Records.
Following the group’s sophomore album, the trio self-released the single, “Suck on This,” in the summer of 2019, followed by its 2020 viral cover of Lash’s “Take Me Away” (a track made famous via its inclusion in the 2003 Lindsay Lohan-starring Disney film “Freaky Friday”).
Having opened for artists like Pennywise, Kate Nash, Vivian Girls and X, playing festivals with Weezer, Rancid, Cat Power and FIDLAR, touring with White Reaper, as well as headlining North American tours and playing local California shows, The Aquadolls are in-your-face and good vibes all at once with energetic performances. The Aquadolls pack a punch with tongue-in cheek lyrics, hard-hitting licks and soothing vocal harmonies. The trio’s latest single, “Disappearing Girl,” is gaining traction after being added to major playlists including Spotify’s The New Alt, New Noise, New Alt-Rock Mixtape, Fierce Femmes and Apple Music’s Shazam: The Best New Music.
