Carson City area Father's Day weekend features outdoor family movie night, Ghost Walk, historic prison tours, live music and more

Fathers' Day weekend events in the Carson City area are piling on as the first day of summer is days away beginning Sunday. Here's what we can look forward to this weekend.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative presents “Basin and Range” by artist Candida Webb at the Community Center’s Crowell Board Room from June 16 to October 14, 2021. CCAI will host a reception for the artist in the Crowell Board Room, this Friday, June 18, 5 to 6:30pm. The Community Center is located at 851 E William Street, Carson City and is open during all public meetings and on request. Go here for more information.

— On Friday, June 18 at 8:30 p.m., “The Field of Dreams” will be screened on the John L. Harvey Field at Western Nevada College to kick off the fourth annual Family Movie Night series. The event is free of charge. Go to the story here for more information.

— The Carson City Emblem Club No. 507 will host a Hawaiian-style dinner this Friday, June 18 at Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177, located at 515 N. Nevada St. in Carson City. Social hour is at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. The cost is $10 per person. On the menu is Kalua pig (pulled pork), chicken Sesame salad, fried rice (Hawaiian style), tropical fruit salad, rainbow sherbet. There are 40 tickets available at the Lodge, open 4 p.m. to close. — Live music from Keith Alan Barnett and the Lonesome Polecat Band will be played at Bella Vita Bistro & Catering this Friday, June 18 from 6-8 p.m. The Americana-style restaurant offers live music every Friday at their location in the Carson Mall. — Living the Good Life Nightclub, Bistro, and Lounge will feature the Alias Smith band outdoors on Friday, June 18 from 6-10 p.m. as well as performer Gemini inside on Saturday night from 7:30-11 p.m. Call for reservations before 5 p.m. at 775-720-5834, after 5 p.m. at 775-841-4663.

— The Carson City Farmer’s Market returns for another Saturday at its temporary location east of the Carson Nugget in the parking lot at 412 N. Stewart Street from 8:30 a.m to 1 p.m. More information can be found here.

— Muscle Powered will be hosting an outdoor gear swap in Carson City on Saturday, June 19 as the conclusion of our Bike Month festivities. This event is intended to help build community among area outdoor enthusiasts, raise money for our non-profit organization, and help more locals get out on the roads and trails. Location: 501 W Carson St., the parking lot behind the Brewery Arts Center. Time: 8 to 11 a.m. Go here for more information.

— Four tours will be available at the Nevada State Prison this Saturday, June 19. Presented by the Nevada State Preservation Society, tour times will proceed every hour from 10-1 p.m. and tickets are $15 a person. Go here for tickets and more information.

— The season opening of 28th annual Carson City Ghost Walk will commence this Saturday evening. All tours depart from the Fox Brewpub at 7 p.m. during the summer months. Tickets are $15 in advance with an additional online fee at www.purplepass.com. More information can be found on the Facebook event page here.

— The Carson City Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the “Empire Swings Back” golf tournament at Empire Ranch Golf Course on Saturday. The tournament will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m. with lunch and ribbon cutting for the Morgan Mill 9-Hole Par 3 Course to follow.

The event is sponsored by Carson City Toyota, Casino Fandango, and the San Franciscan Roaster Company, among others. Those interested can find the tournament registration here, as well as the Facebook event page here.

— Additionally, Father’s Day activities will begin a day early on Saturday at Battle Born Ammunition & Firearms, Inc. From 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on June 19, the company is hosting their third annual pre-Father’s Day Guys Only Carrying a Concealed Weapon (CCW) class.

The training is a State of Nevada approved course, including mandatory basic gun safety, basic pistol and ammunition knowledge, stance, aim, and more. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Pricing and group offers can be found on the Facebook event page here.

— On Sunday, June 20, Battle Born Harley-Davidson will be hosting a Father’s Day Bikes and BBQ day. Beginning at 11 a.m., participants will be riding from the Carson City location to Verdi for lunch at Chop 40 Rustic American restaurant. Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. More than two dozen brewers, as well as several food trucks, will line the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus there will be live music on the McFadden Plaza stage.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City will host its first "Walking as One at 1" labyrinth walk on Saturday, May 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 314 N. Division at Telegraph.

"Walking as One at 1" happens on World Labyrinth Day each year where participants across the globe engage in a labyrinth walk at 1 p.m. local time. This synchronized practice creates a 24-hour rolling wave of peaceful energy that passes from one time zone to the next across the world. The idea is to collectively contribute to a sense of unity and harmony.

On Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m., the Washoe Valley Forum hosts a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure.” Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff assume the fictive characters of wrangler Clive, and cook/housekeeper Vivian, that worked at a Washoe Valley “divorce ranch” from the 1940s to 1960s.

Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Liz has been working on a new album for over a year and she wrote "Mother Earth" as one of the songs for that album. She had finished writing the song when she saw the videos of the thousands of pounds of trash left on Zephyr Shoals on the 4th of July.

A local family and others aided in the search and location of a missing elderly woman Saturday night in Carson City.

Carson High School named Mikey Hoffer and Selma Works as the 2024 Prom King and Queen. A short coronation ceremony was held during the prom dance. Additionally, Rodrigo Diaz and Alissa Powers were crowned Carson High School’s Friendship Ball King and Queen during that dance Thursday evening in the Morse Burley Gym.

Carson City’s Community Development Director Hope Sullivan will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend.

On Sunday, May 5 head down to the Carson Ridge Disc Golf Park for a fun tournament-style round of Cinco de Mayo Disc Golf beginning at 10 a.m. Rain or Shine, the round will include both the Pony Express and Stadium Courses for a total of 27 holes.

Carson City Symphony's Youth Strings ensembles, Youth Chorus, and Not Quite Ready for Carnegie Hall Players (NQR) adult intermediate string ensemble, will feature music and dance of the Scottish Highland in a "Music Here and Afar" concert on Thursday, April 25, 6:30 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. This family friendly concert is open to all and admission is free.
