NEW ULM — Twenty-three New Ulm Suzuki School of Music Summer Camp students have been rehearsing with Peter McGuire of St. Peter this week for a summer chamber music concert tonight.

The concert that begins at 6:30 p.m. June 17 in the United Church of Christ (UCC) sanctuary features the music of Brahms, Pachelbel, Vivladi, Telemann, and other composers.

Soloists include Sebastian Smith, Nathaniel and Joshua Carlovsky, Jamis Martens, Ashley Schaefer, Ella Wurster, and Matthew Feldcamp.

Ensemble groups include Joe, Issac, and Matthew Feldcamp; Joshua Carlovsky, Jamis Maratens, Isaiah Smith and Jeremy Bohlmann-Little.

Another group performance features Avery Rieke, Eden Carlovsky, Anna Mages, Gabriella Smith, Ainsley Tess, Lola Lueth, and Natalie Matzke.

“Due to COVID, we cancelled our annual summer pops camp for the second year in a row,” said New Ulm Suzuki School of Music String Program Director Paula Anderson.

“We wanted to give our students some kind of musi camp experience and we landed on the idea of a chamber camp,” Anderson said. “This would allow for smaller groups and more personal attention.”

Anderson said Minnesota Orchestra member Peter McGuire of St. Peter, “graciously agreed to come and work with our group.”

McGuire will play the Winter Concerto by Vivaldi, accompanied by Suzuki School accompanist Kate Carlovsky.

Originally from Mankato, McGuire began playing violin at the Mankato Suzuki School at age four. He later performed with the Mankato Area Youth Symphony Orchestra and Mankato Symphony Orchestra.

An Affiliate Professor of Violin at Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Minnesota School of Music, McGuire has a private teaching studio. His students have won positions with major orchestras in the U.S. and Europe.

McGuire has served as Second Concertmaster with the Tonhalle Orchester-Zurich, one of Switzerland’s leading orchestras. He will soon continue his musical career in Switzerland.

In addition, McGuire has performed and recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic, SWR Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, All-Star Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

He has given masterclasses throughout the U.S. and Switzerland. McGuire has performed with ensembles through the U.S, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.

The UCC church requests that anyone not vaccinated please wear a mask to the concert.
