Asian American Heritage Month/Keith Jarrett & Gary Peacock Feature + Jazz Classics, Irving Berlin

  Monday, May 10

Night Train kicks off the week with some classic compositions and recordings – including music from John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Erroll Garner, Art Blakey (with Hank Mobley and Jimmy Smith) and Anita O’Day (with music from her first album on Verve, which also was the first album released by that legendary jazz label).

Tuesday, May 11

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency with some eerie tunes to celebrate Twilight Zone Day. The show also celebrates the birthdays of pianist and composer Carla Bley, and one of the architects of the Great American Songbook, Irving Berlin (including a special featuring his music in hour two). And there’s new music from Greg Abate celebrating the music of Kenny Barron, and Brazilian jazz guitarist Phill Fest.

Wednesday, May 12

Night Train marks the birthday of May featured artist Gary Peacock with a special program devoted to his music. We’ll hear him as part of the great “Standards Trio” with Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette (including in a special in hour two devoted to the small groups of Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea), with pianists Chick Corea and Bill Evans, and in duo recordings with pianist Marc Copland and guitarists Bill Frisell and Ralph Towner.

Thursday, May 13

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to mark the birthday of Stevie Wonder tonight. We’ll hear jazz covers of his songs from Don Braden, Jen Chapin, Grant Green, Janis Siegel with Fred Hersch, Gene Harris, Dan Wilson, Dave Pietro, and Chick Corea.

We’ll also mark birthdays of Red Garland and Gil Evans (both with Miles Davis), and highlight new releases from organist Brian Charette, guitarists Roni Ben-Hur and Charlie Apicella, and saxophonist Jim Snidero.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
