Kim Nain drowns out noise to focus on career

November 15, 2018
Entertainer Kim Nain talks about her new album and her future plans for music and life.

Up-and-coming artiste Kim Nain is determined to make a name for herself in music.

Well aware of how harsh the local audience can be, Nain, who gave up a career in law to pursue music, said she has learnt to drown out the noise and focus on achieving her goals.

"On paper I'm new but I've been in the industry for a number of years. Years of experience have taught me how to handle criticism. If it was up to the critics, I would have been done with this business a long time ago. I have been told 'no' many, many times," she said. "I know the Jamaican audience is a very tough audience and they are very hard to please. I try to do music they can relate to so that it will be easier for them to listen and accept."

She said that Jamaican people tend not to give credit to artistes once they don't know them.

CLOSE TO ROOTS

"They tend to judge before they actually listen and so I don't take it too personal," she said. "I find that so many times artistes from Jamaica, for them to be accepted by the Jamaican audience, dem affi buss overseas. I don't want to be forced to go overseas just to get an ear. This is where I was born, where I am from. I want to always stay as close to my roots as possible even while I reach out to the different markets."

As she gets ready to drop her debut album later this month, the entertainer said she wants to carve her own place in the music industry by not 'boxing herself in'.

She told THE STAR that her 11-track album Deal Wid It will see her taking on many genres.

"I don't just do reggae. I was born into Jamaican music but at the same time I'm influenced by other genres and I want to be able to show that diversity in my music, and this album is a nice compilation of the different elements of everything that has influenced me," she said. "Apart from the fact that there's one track on the album called Deal Wid It, the title is saying I have all this music that's inside of me and I want to put it out there for the world to see. On this album I'm saying this is me, this is who I am so 'deal wid it'."

The album is slated for release November 23.
