Cuyuna Range band to perform in bandstand

The Cuyuna Range Community Band will make its first appearance at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 27, in the Gregory Park bandstand.

The band is a volunteer concert band which performs at area community celebrations and venues throughout the summer months including Emily Day, Aitkin Riverboat Days, Crosby in the Park and the Heartwood Center in Crosby. The group consists of musicians from throughout the Brainerd lakes area and their concert repertoire includes, marches, show tunes, light classical and popular music.

Bandstand concerts are free and open to the public. People can bring a lawn chair, a blanket and be ready to enjoy the music. The rain-out site is at The Center, 803 Kingwood St., Brainerd. If the concerts are moved indoors, signs will be posted on the bandstand and it will be announced on WJJY radio.

Concerts in the park are collaboration between Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department and The Center. Additional supporting sponsors are the Brainerd Community Foundation, Brainerd Lions, Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union and the BN Credit Union.

2 folk groups to appear at Green Fair

LITTLE FALLS-The St. Francis Green Fair Folk Festival scheduled 4-8 p.m. Aug. 2 welcomes two folk groups to the stage during this year's festival.

Homespun Jammin' will perform 4-5 p.m. and play a variety of music from hammer dulcimer tunes to folk songs. Based in Saint Cloud, the group is comprised of Sue Pundsack on hammer dulcimer, guitar and harmonica; Connie Schwinghammer on electric bass; and Carolyn Law on guitar and mandolin.

Knotted Clover, will perform 5-6 p.m., is a trio of musicians living in the Twin Cities area and performing since 2013. This family ensemble performs traditional music and folk songs from Ireland, Scotland and the United States with a variety of instruments.

Ella Padden sings traditional Irish songs and contributes melodic arrangements on the harp and tin whistle. Connor Padden, on fiddle and mandolin, infuses traditional Celtic tunes with ornamentation and playing. Greg Padden on guitar and vocals blends the music together into an upbeat acoustic experience for listeners of all ages.

The Green Fair Folk Festival takes place on the grounds of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls. Last year there were more than 50 exhibitors sharing information on green and sustainable products or services. Other music scheduled for the fair is URock, consisting of fifth- through 12th-graders, who took a camp and play all types of music.

Poet Diane Jarvenpa to present at Brainerd library

Poet Diane Jarvenpa will appear at noon Monday at the Brainerd Public Library to share works from her new chapbook "swift, bright, drift ..." This collection "is about the legacy of our wilderness, how we walk within it and around it and are still mystified by it. It is about being in the woods, observing, listening and sitting inside its luminous silence," it stated in a news release.

She is the author of "Divining the Landscape" and "The Tender Wild Things," which received the Midwest Independent Publishers Association book award in poetry. Jarvenpa is also an accomplished songwriter and musician who records under the name Diane Jarvi.

Library attendees are welcome to bring a packed lunch or can enjoy the light refreshments provided. These presentations are sponsored by the Friends of the Brainerd Public Library through their volunteer and fundraising efforts, and are free of charge to the public. No registration is needed.

Chokecherry Festival coming

PEQUOT LAKES-The 10th annual Chokecherry Festival will be Aug. 5 in Pequot Lakes.

Festival activities include the Chokecherry culinary contest, pit spitting contest, back-seat driver game, children's activities, crafters and food vendors.

This year it's also the Pequot Lakes Fire Department's 100th Year Celebration. Live music starts at 6 p.m. featuring Muddy Waters Band and then the Wyld Ryce Band.

Brainerd residents to compete in 10,000 Lakes Concours d'Elegance

Brainerd residents Andy and Terry Wurtzberger have been accepted to compete in the fifth annual 10,000 Lakes Concours d'Elegance scheduled 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on the Excelsior Commons in Excelsior.

They will compete with their 1933 Chrysler CT8 Royal.

This exhibition will feature more than 180 historic and superbly-conditioned cars, boats and motorcycles from as early as the 1900s, displayed along the shores of Lake Minnetonka. This year's event will benefit Bridging.

Tickets for adults are $25 per person. Admission for children 12 and under and military members with identification is free. A limited amount of tickets will be sold.

'A Splash of Color' exhibit to open

CROSSLAKE-The Crosslake Art Club will host its 33rd annual show and sale "A Splash of Color" from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 10-12 at the Crosslake Community Center. The show will feature the works of more than 50 members of the Crosslake Art Club, including original oil, acrylic, watercolor paintings, pottery, jewelry, prints and cards.

The event is free and open to the public. There will be demonstrations, door prizes and refreshments each day of the show. Each year the show attracts more than a 1,000 art lovers to view and purchase art.

Crosslake Art Club to host 3 artists

CROSSLAKE-The Crosslake Art Club, following its mission to promote the arts, will host three internationally known water media artists for workshops in the coming months.

Rose Edin, will teach a three-day workshop Aug. 28-30 demonstrating her techniques for painting light and color. Edin teaches throughout the United States and Canada.

Judy Blain is a full-time artist specializing in watercolor with a loose, impressionistic style. Her class will be Sept. 27-29.

Dan Mondloch, is a watermedia artist who has gained fame through his award winning paintings. His class will feature watercolor and acrylic techniques and will be Oct. 31 through Nov. 1.

Needle art workshop planned

AITKIN-A needle-felted landscape workshop taught by Lisa Jordan will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 19 at Jaques Art Center in Aitkin. The class is limited to 15. Call the art center at 218-927-2363 to register.

The art center also is looking for Juried Show entries, which are due on Aug. 15. Any art form is accepted as long as it depicts the concept of "Light." Call the Jaques for more information.

Stage North announces 2018 season

Stage North, a nonprofit community theater, announced its fourth full season of plays which will be performed in the 480 seat auditorium at the Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd.

In the spring, Stage North will present William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," a storm, a shipwreck, a pair of separated twins, mistaken identities and the perfect love triangle all come together in what many call Shakespeare's finest comedy. As with "A Midsummer Night's Dream," director Gary Hirsch and choreographer Wendy DeGeest will add music, dance and tweak the language to make it more understandable to the audience. The production will take the stage April 19-21, 2018.

In the summer, the theater company will put on the original production "Baby Face," where a notorious Chicago gangster vacations at a local resort. Did he come to relax or to mastermind Brainerd's crime of the century? "Baby Face," the true story of the 1933 armed bank robbery that put Brainerd on the map and made Baby Face Nelson the FBI's most wanted fugitive.

This world premiere includes machine guns, authentic Depression-era music, and lots of dancing. This play will be on stage June 13-16.

Stage North will again perform "A Christmas Carol" Dec. 13-16 of 2018. Audience members can join Ebeneezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley, Belle, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, all the spirits and a large cast.

Although not part of the season ticket package, Stage North announces it's new After Dark series where it will perform "Dracula," the classic story of blood and gore Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 1-2. The play written in 1997 was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bram Stoker novel, a script that follows the book closely with all the characters including Jonathon, Mina, Lucy and Dr. Van Helsing.

Camp Knutson of Lutheran Social Service serves children with identified needs. The auction is coordinated by the Paul Bunyan Auxiliary. The Quilt Auction and the recent Night Under the Stars are the two major summer fundraisers benefitting Camp Knutson.

Segler Memorial benefit scheduled

LITTLE FALLS-Great River Arts in Little Falls will host an all-ages concert benefiting the Abigail Segler Memorial Fine Arts Scholarship from 2-6 p.m. Aug. 5. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

The event includes music and activities for all ages, such as face painting and crafts. Performances feature some of the area's finest young musicians and vocalists, many of whom performed alongside Abby Segler in concerts and theater productions.

A 2015 graduate of Little Falls Community High School and recipient of the school's Fine Arts Student of the Year award, Segler died in June 2016 from acute myeloid leukemia. Her family and friends established the Abigail Segler Memorial Fine Arts Scholarship to honor her memory and help local students pursue their fine arts education goals. Proceeds from the freewill concert will benefit the scholarship fund.

The schedule of events includes four sets of music by three different acts. Total Monroe hits the stage at 2 p.m., with classic and modern rock. Total Monroe formed in 2015 and three of the musicians met at St. Francis Music Center. The group performs classic and modern rock hits as well as the band's original numbers. The band includes Cary Armagost on guitar and vocals; Audrey Thomas on bass and vocals; and Logan Gerads on drums.

The Little Falls Community High School Musical Revue will perform around 3 p.m. and reprise performances from several recent musical theater productions at LFCHS. This group features a multi-piece band and chorus comprised of LFCHS alumni and current students.

Your Friend and Mine will take the stage about 4 p.m. to perform two sets-one paying tribute to popular artists in a variety of musical styles, and the other featuring selections from the hit Broadway musical "Hamilton."

Current band members include Lucas Burr on keyboard, flute and vocals; Cary Armagost on guitar, clarinet and vocals; Max Jorgensen on guitar; Eric Burr on bass; Will Jorgensen on drums; and vocalists Kalli Kalpakoff, Michael Kalpakoff, Aisha Holmberg, Natalie Shanoff and Matt Wishard. Joining the group for this Little Falls performance will be vocalists Alex Toms-Warzecha, Jake Massman, Madeline Wright on violin and vocals and Austin Norton.

Northwoods Art and Book Festival coming

HACKENSACK-The Northwoods Arts Council, a local nonprofit organization, will host its 21st annual Art and Book Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 12 in downtown Hackensack.

This festival is known for its high quality original art in a variety of media that includes paint, clay, fiber, metal, wood, photography and jewelry. Artist, crafters, food vendors, music and children's art and face painting will be located on Lake Avenue, which will be closed to traffic. Unique to this festival is the popular book arts section where 36 authors sell signed copies of their books in two locations: the Hackensack Community Center and Union Congregational Church.

A new event has been added this year with a special writing workshop "NOW OR NEVER: Collecting Family Stories." It will be presented by Faith Sullivan, winner of 2016 Midwest Book awards. The presentation will be 11 a.m. to noon Aug. 12 at UCC.

Award-winning quilt featured at Camp Knutson

The annual Camp Knutson Quilt Auction will be Aug. 12 and will offer "Carmel Star" which won Best of Show and First Place at the 2016 Utah State Fair.

The quilt is an adaptation of Feathered Star, a Judy Niemeyer design. It comes with a written appraisal of workmanship and replacement value by a certified appraiser of the American Quilters Society.

The quilt was constructed in shades of rust, gold, brown and grey using foundation paper piecing techniques Niemeyer, international quilting instructor has developed. It was custom machine quilted using multiple intricate patterns. The quilt is one of two quilts donated to the

Camp Knutson Quilt Auction in honor of a camper who has attended the Hand and Hand Autistic Camp for many years.

The Camp Knutson Quilt Auction will be held at 11148 Manhattan Point Boulevard, Crosslake. The viewing of the quilts and the silent auction will be 9:30-11:30 a.m. The live auction will start at noon.

Author Talk set Aug. 17

CROSBY-The Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library featuring Jill Hannah Anderson and her book "To-Hell-And-Back Club" will be 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the library in Crosby.

The book, published by Pandamoon Publishing in Texas, takes place in a fictitious town around the Brainerd lakes area and mentions several area businesses.

The book's description is "Who can you turn to when your life falls apart? Peyton Brooks, a newly-empty nester with a comatose marriage, loses her three friends in a car crash and reaches out to women in the 'To-Hell-And-Back Club,' hoping they'll help resuscitate her life.

"Women use their sense of humor, strength and support to help pull her off the couch and back to living her life. She rebuilds the life she'd put aside two decades ago. But when Peyton digs up time capsules she and her friends buried years ago, and uncovers secrets about those she loved, she struggles to keep her own life-changing secret buried."

BAY Ministries to host African choir concert

Brainerd Area Youth Ministries will host the African Children's Choir with a concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd.

The African Children's Choir performs lively African songs and dances. The program features well-loved children's songs, traditional Spirituals and Gospel favorites.

Concerts are free and open to all. A free-will offering is taken at the performance to support African Children's Choir programs, such as education, care and relief and development programs.

Music for Life, the parent organization for The African Children's Choir, works in seven African countries such as, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. The organization has educated more than 52,000 children and impacted the lives of more than 100,000 people through its relief and development programs during its history. MFL's purpose is to help create new leadership for tomorrow's Africa, by focusing on education.

The African Children's Choir has performed before presidents, heads of state and most recently the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, for her diamond jubilee. The choir also has sung alongside artists such as Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Michael W. Smith.

The African Children's Choir is a nonprofit humanitarian and relief organization dedicated to helping Africa's most vulnerable children today so they can help Africa tomorrow.
