Music News LIVE: Bands do 'glorified karaoke' for refugee charity

Jaden, son of the Hollywood A-list Smith family is the latest to have stepped into the music industry.

He's released bits and bobs since 2012, including some mixtapes and last year an EP.

Here is his latest offering which sees him stumble around what look a lot like sets from the HBO thriller Westworld, wearing the self-lacing boots from Back to the Future II while chucking up what looks like oil.

Weird visuals aside, there's something a little PM Dawn about this and we kind of like it..

While the congratulations and backslapping is in full effect, post Grammy-nominations, not everyone is popping the champagne corks.

Toots and the Maytals' 1968 classic “54-46 (That’s My Number) has been given an EDM going over by Major Lazer and Bad Royale in the new track My Number.

You might best recognise the original from the opening credits to the Film This Is England.

The Chainsmokers have had time to reflect on their Grammy nomination further, revealing their precise whereabouts when the news first dropped.

Dunkin Donuts of course.  Why wouldn't they be? Of course, we should stress that other doughnut retailers are always available.

With her nine nominations this year, added to her previous 53, Beyonce is now the most nominated woman in the awards history - just two behind her husband, rapper Jay Z.

She has won twenty of them - compared with Jay's 21 but only a fool would bet against her leapfrogging him come the awards night in Los Angeles on Sunday, 12 February.

Country star Alison Krauss still has the most wins for a woman on 26.

More on the Grammys now, after Adele secured five nominations in total.

We told you she had three.  Well she's just added two more, for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance

She'll be happy about that then. As will American country pop singer Kelsey Ballerini who made the shortlist for Best New Artist.

She tweeted the following after realising that she's going to need a new frock for the occasion.

The Firefly Music Festival in Delaware, is to be the world's first completely fan-curated music festival.

Fans will be able to register on the Firefly website to vote on everything from bands to art installations to foot outlets and merchandise.

Previous event have seen acts like Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Blink-182, and Florence and the Machine booked at the request of fans.

The festival is held over three days next June.

Brits Critics Choice nominee Dua Lipa is driving an astounding blue LED lit car in the new video for her track Be The One.

The video was directed by Daniel Kaufman and stars rising US actor, Ansel Elgort.

We don't normally go in for overly flashy cars but the flashes on this one are pretty cool.

Libertine Pete - no wait, Peter Doherty failed to turn up for an in-store gig at Rough Trade East in London last night.

The record label used social media to let fans know that the frontman would not be coming “due to delays en route."

Pete's second solo album Hamburg Demonstrations was released on Friday and he's due to play the O2 Forum in London tonight and the Albert Hall in Manchester tomorrow.  So fingers crossed if you have tickets for that one.

Fans with tickets for yesterday's in-store can get a refund, although Rough Trade are apparently working on re-arranging the gig today.

So it's your call really.  Foolish maybe, but we're not giving up on Pete just yet.

Whether he turns up or not is all part of the fun isn't it? Anyone?

For the first time, more money has been spent on vinyl in a week than money spent on downloaded albums.

Vinyls earned £2.4m last week, while downloads took in £2.1m, according to the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

In the same week last year, vinyl albums made £1.2m while digital ones made £4.4m.

However, downloads have been in sharp decline as consumers switch to streaming services while the surge in vinyl sales is being attributed, in part, to supermarkets - which now stock old school records.

And itss worth noting that vinyl is the more expensive medium - in the case of Kate Bush's live album Before The Dawn, by four times.

‘Choose love’ was the mission last night in East London as indie icons Wolf Alice, Swim Deep, Slaves and more came together for a spot of ‘glorified karaoke’ in aid of the Help Refugees charity.

The Band 4 Refugees night was part of a series of events, including next week’s Rave For Refugees (involving acts such as Chase & Status and Faithless) aimed at raising money and awareness about the ongoing problems for many at refugee camps around Europe.

Ellie Rowsell from Wolf Alice told BBC News she'd been inspired to pull together fans of all of the bands involved for a fundraiser after seeing some of the "inspiring work" achieved by the charity.

"All of the bands here are of the same opinion that we want to help," she said.

Quote Message: We don’t agree with a lot of the ways our government have been dealing with the refugee situation and a lot of the hatred that is apparent online and across the globe - so this covers night was one way of pushing that message."

The bands above were also joined on stage at various points by members of Years & Years, Black Honey, Superfood and Dream Wife, to name but a few.

Spector frontman Frederick Macpherson adopted the role of MC for most of the proceedings and seemed quite at home, drawing great laughs from the room when introducing Peace frontman Harrison Koisser as "The lead singer of the 1975...'s ex-girl-friend's new boyfriend!"

Peace's cover of The Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter was certainly the musical highlight on a night of indulging some rather guilty pleasures... the spirits of George Michael, Five, Robbie Williams and Cyndi Lauper were all channelled at some point.  

And while some of the covers were only meant for having fun (quite literally in the case of Years & Years' Cyndi routine) the overall message was a much more serious one.  

Help Refugees work across France, Lebanon, Turkey and Syria and some of the cash raised from ticket sales on the night will go to prepare a camp in Greece for the winter, where an estimated 9,000 pregnant women and 24,000 children are still living in tents susceptible to flooding. 

Philli Boyle from Help Refugees said: "With winter approaching there’s an even greater need to provide insulation, warm clothes, food, and heating.

"It's incredible to have these influential musicians involved, as people who care what they have to say will now understand the humanitarian possibilities and that this is something we all have to get behind."

Rapper 50 Cent has won a $14.5m (£11m) payout in a malpractice lawsuit over a pair of headphones, it is being reported.

According to Forbes, Fiddy  - real name Curtis Jackson - sued a US legal firm over advice it gave him which led to a former business partner, Sleek Audio, taking legal action over the release of his own range of headphones.

He had worked with Sleek in 2010 to create a range but the venture collapsed.

On legal advice, he then formed another business using a similar design which sold well, however Sleek then sued him for 'misappropriation of trade secrets' and was awarded $16m.

50 Cent filed for bankruptcy in 2015 after another legal action over a sex tape left him with a $5m bill.

The new $14.5m will now go towards settling some £20m in debts.

A former squat, where Clash singer Joe Strummer lived nearly 40 years ago is to get a commemorative blue plaque.

It's part of Punk.London - the year-long festival commemorating 40 years of punk.

Seymour Housing Co-op will unveil the blue plaque at the site of the squat in Daventry Street in Marylebone.

Strummer, who died in 2002, lived there in one of his most creative phases, in 1978 and 1979.

The Clash used the Edgware Road Ice Cream parlour nearby as their office.

The unveiling will take place at 1300 GMT tomorrow - the anniversary of the release of The Clash’s London Calling single.

The video for Sick Love seems to be some kind of warning about living in Los Angeles and if you don't mind seeing a cartoon Anthony Kiedis being decapitated by a massive tarantula, then watch below.

Elbow have debuted their newest track Magnificent on Jo Whiley's show on Radio 2.

It's taken from their forthcoming album Little Fictions and fans will be glad to know that it's the type of soaring ballad that they band generally excel at.

A big string section and Garvey's emotive vocals about "throwing her arms around the world / a world that doesn't know how much it needs this little girl".

Expect to hear it over various sporting montages next year.

US pop star Lady Gaga has revealed on a US TV show that she continues to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder after being raped at the age of 19.

"I suffer from a mental illness - I suffer from PTSD," she told the Today Show on a visit to a homeless shelter for young gay people in New York.

"I've never told anyone that before," the star, now 30, added.

Lady Gaga revealed in a radio interview two years ago that she was raped as a teenager.

"The kindness that's been shown to me, by doctors as well as my family and my friends, it's really saved my life," she said, after bringing presents to the astonished teenagers at the centre.

The Poker Face singer later tweeted: "Today I shared one my deepest secrets w/ the world. Secrets keep you sick w/ shame".

Campaigners have successfully hit a 100,000 crowdfunding target to help erect a statue of David Bowie in character as Ziggy Stardust 

The statue is planned for Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, where he first performed as Ziggy at the Friars music venue in September 1971.

He also played tracks from his as-yet-unreleased album Hunky Dory, which turned out to be a bit good. 

There is a still a pretty big but though - as the campaigners must raise another £50,000 yet.

Time to dig deep for the thin white duke.
