Review: Joe Nichols phenomenal on new country album ‘Never Gets Old’ (Includes first-hand account)

It opens with the witty, traditional country tune “Diamonds Make Babies,” and it is followed by the infectious “Girl in the Song,” where Nichols makes an allusion to Tom Petty.

The ballad “We All Carry Something” is the song that Nichols claimed as his personal favorite on this project, and rightfully so, due to its moving nature. Another well-crafted ditty is the upbeat “I’d Sing About You,” and he showcases his wide range on the ballad “Breathless.” An added bonus is the inclusion of “Billy Graham’s Bible” on this project as well (it was previously featured on his Crickets CD).

He shows his spitfire side on “Tall Boys,” and he displays his rumbling baritone vocals on “Hostage,” which is slightly reminiscent of his chart-topping single “Gimmie That Girl.” The highlight track on the album is the title track tune, “Never Gets Old,” which is simply divine: traditional country music at its finest.

After the smooth and sultry ballad “So You’re Saying,” it closes with the poignant “This Side of the River” and a funny country version of “Baby Got Back,” featuring Darren Knight.

Never Gets Old is available on iTunes.

The Verdict

Overall, Joe Nichols’ new album Never Gets Old is his best studio effort to date. The neo-traditionalist has managed to outdo himself. There are no filler tracks on this collection, and the songs are eclectic and refreshing. It is one of those country records with a retro feel to it that ought to “never get old,” to quote its title. This new CD garners an A+ rating.
