Jimmy Fortune talks new album ‘Jimmy Fortune: Sings the Classics’ (Includes interview)

His highly-anticipated new CD will be released on April 21 via the Gaither Music Group, and it features collaborations with multi-Grammy winner Ricky Skaggs (“Wake Up Little Susie”), bluegrass group The Isaacs (“Take It to the Limit”) and the Voices of Lee. It will be available at music retailers everywhere, along with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store locations nationwide. “I teamed up with Bill Gaither and producer Ben Isaacs. These are songs that really shaped my life,” he said. “These are the songs that have impacted the songs that I have been writing today. All of these songs are so important to me.”

Fortune praised The Isaacs for nailing the background vocals on “Take It to the Limit” song from The Eagles. “They did such a wonderful job,” he said. The acclaimed tenor included “Yesterday” on this project since he dubbed it as his “favorite Beatles song.” “It was one of the most beautiful songs ever written, so it had to be on there,” he said, referring to The Beatles classic.

The past year, Fortune was honored by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) at the 10th annual ACM Honors with the “Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award” for his contributions to country music, along with each member of The Statler Brothers. “That was something that you can’t explain,” he said. “You got to be thankful for that. I still pinch myself.”

A Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee, Fortune received his first GMA Dove Award for “Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year” for the sing “Life’s Railway to Heaven,” where he collaborated with The Oak Ridge Boys. “That’s another first in my life. I’ve never won a Dove award in my life, and I am so proud of it. I’ve always wanted one and now I’ve got one. I owe it to so many people,” he said, graciously.
