Born in 1936, Kristofferson's songwriting hobby turned into a career in the late '60s when his songs "Vietnam Blues," "Jody and the Kid," and "From the Bottle to the Bottom" reached the Top 40. In 1970, he dropped his first album, "Kristofferson," which reached No. 10 on the charts. That same year, Kristofferson achieved a unique feat, winning two prestigious "Song of the Year" awards for two different songs, from both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association.

His classic No. 1 hit, "Me and Bobby McGee," was released on Janis Joplin's posthumous album in 1971, marking his crossover into the pop genre. Kristofferson's sophomore album, "The Silver Tongued Devil and I," was considered his breakthrough album, cracking the Top Five on the country charts and Top 20 on the pop charts. The album included Top 40 pop song, "Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)." Three of Kristofferson's songs received Grammy Award nominations for "Best Country Song" in 1972, with "Help Me Make it Through the Night" winning the award.

In the following years, he released a string of easy listening and country hits, including "Why Me," "A Song I'd Like to Sing," "Loving Arms," and "Lover Please," and penned dozens of additional charted singles. From the mid '80s through the '90s, Kristofferson was a member of country music supergroup, Highwaymen, which included living legends Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Their first album and title track, "Highwayman," reached No. 1 on the country charts, and their second album, "Highwayman 2," reached No. 4.
